Wal-Mart Relocates Tianjin Distribution Center
November 2, 2007
Tianjin, China - November 2, 2007 – Wal-Mart China today announced the reopening of the Tianjin Distribution Center after relocation. Government officials of Tianjin City, Terry Cullen, Vice President, Business Development of Wal-Mart China, Antonio Lee, Senior Director, Supply Chain of Wal-Mart China and Arnaud Sautel, Senior Manager of Gazeley China attended the opening ceremony.
Opened in 2003, the original Wal-Mart Tianjin Distribution Center is the only distribution center serving Wal-Mart stores up north of the Yangtse River areas. The relocation is a strategic move for Wal-Mart’s sustainable development in China. The new distribution center, developed by Wal-Mart’s wholly owned subsidiary Gazeley, a global leading provider of sustainable logistics space, is located at the Beichen District of Tianjin City and covers an area of 43,000 square meters, with nearly 300 full time employees. The new distribution center has been partly in use since October 8 and is expected to reach a daily capacity of 330,000 cases per day, four times of the old one, when in full operation, which helps lower distribution and inventory costs attached to suppliers as well as cutting operation costs while improving work efficiency in Wal-Mart stores, leading to lower product prices for customers and better working environment for associates.
All-level government officials from Tianjin City celebrated the opening of the new Wal-Mart Tianjin Distribution Center at the opening ceremony. “Beichen district holds good conditions for the development of logistics industry in terms of preferred geographic position, huge area and convenient transportation.” He added. “The logistics system ensures Wal-Mart’s steady and health growth in the long term and guarantees higher work efficiency for both Wal-Mart and the suppliers.” said Seung Lee, Senior Director - Supply Chain of Wal-Mart China. “Wal-Mart strives for ‘saving people money so they can live better’, and the completion of the new Wal-Mart Tianjin Distribution Center can help us better achieve the goal.”
Country Director of Gazeley China, Jack Yang said: ”The newly built Wal-Mart Tianjin Distribution Center features an array of sustainable measures and standards, including reducing emission of carbon dioxide, lowering energy and water consumption, and utilizing recyclable materials, which helps save operation costs while making distribution more eco-friendly. The whole distribution center uses T5 energy saving light bulbs that save about 20 to 30 per cent more energy than normal light bulbs. The warehouses use day lighting and an air-conditioning heat energy recycling system. Also, the distribution center employs recyclable energy to reduce energy consumption, for example, installing a 20-squre-meter wide sunshine battery and two 10-kilowatt wind power generators that may generate electricity up to 7,300 kilowatt per year. Moreover, the distribution center is equipped with 10 solar energy water heaters that may provide 1.7 tons of hot water every day and save electricity up to 25,550 kilowatt every year. Putting all these measures together, Wal-Mart Tianjin Distribution Center can reduce 31 tons of carbon dioxide emission every year that equal to the emission data of a family in 138 months.”
