9th Anniversary Event
Donating RMB 600,000 to sponsor 15 poor college
students for
their 4 years’ tuition

[August 11, Shenzhen] Around 500 customers from 11 stores in
Shenzhen gathered at SAM’S CLUB to celebrate the 9th anniversary
of Wal-Mart China. On the celebration ceremony, Wal-Mart donated
RMB 600,000 to Shenzhen Charity Community to sponsor 15 poor college
students who could not afford tuition to fulfill their four-year
studies. Attendees include Mr. Liu Runhua, director general of
Shenzhen Civil Affairs Bureau, Fan Jianhua, secretary general of
Shenzhen Charity Community, and James Lee, Vice president of Wal-Mart
(China) Investment Co. Ltd.
In response to the Second Eyas Flying Program launched by Shenzhen
Civil Affairs Bureau, Wal-Mart decided to donate RMB 600,000 to
Shenzhen Charity Community in order to directionally sponsor 15
poor students who could not afford tuition to fulfill their four-year
studies through partnership with SZITIC Commercial Property Co.,
Ltd and Capitaland. On the gathering party, James Lee on behalf
of Wal-Mart (China) Investment Co. Ltd. delivered the donation
tablet to Mr. Fan, secretary general of Shenzhen Charity Community.
James Lee said: “Up to now, Wal-Mart has run 48 outlets in
23 cities in China since its entry into China in 1996. Wal-Mart
served local customers with ‘Every Day Low Price’ policy
and high quality customer service. The Charity party for the 9th
Anniversary of Wal-Mart China is also one kind of feedback to our
customers, and the continuation of our Good Works. Meanwhile, we
also hope to build up a love bridge between customers and our associates
through this activity to care about and help those people in need.”
In addition, it was announced on the celebration that Wal-Mart
will launched a donation activity called “let our warm hearts
grow in strength here” from Mid-August to Mid-September in
11 Wal-Mart stores in Shenzhen. Customers, SAM’S CLUB members
and Wal-Mart associates are encouraged to donate clothing and money
to help those people hit by flood in Guangdong Province and other
regions. Every customer who takes part in the donation can get
a one-day pass card sent by SAM’S CLUB and experience SAM’S
CLUB membership for one day.
Mr. Liu, director general of Shenzhen Civil Affairs Bureau highly
appraised Wal-Mart’s charitable behavior. He said:” As
the No. 1 enterprise in the Fortune Global 500 List, Wal-Mart not
only promotes Shenzhen citizens’ living standards, drives
the development of Shenzhen circulating economy and manufacturing
industry, makes a great contribution to Shenzhen economy, but also
sets a good example for other companies to follow in respect of
community involvements.
The leading actors of this party were customers from neighborhood
communities of Wal-Mart stores, because they brought along wonderful
performance, such as the jazz drum performed by six children from
New Trend Kindergarten in Yuanlin community and the dance named
Green Dream performed by customers from Overseas Chinese Town community,
etc.
Wal-Mart opened its first SAM’S CLUB and Supercenter on August
12, 1996 in Shenzhen. Its Every Day Low Price policy and unique
one-stop shopping experience changed Shenzhen people’s shopping
conception and habits, and brought along reform and development
in Shenzhen retailing industry.
Through nine years’ development, Wal-Mart has opened 11 outlets
in Shenzhen including 3 formats: Wal-Mart Supercenter, SAM’S
CLUB and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. Wal-Mart operates 48 stores
in 23 cities in China with more than 25,000 associates. Wal-Mart
advocates its corporate culture--- Respect for the Individual,
Service to Our Customers, and Strive for Excellence, and engages
in providing quality goods at low prices and aggressive customer
service. In 2004, the total value of merchandise Wal-Mart directly
and indirectly purchasing from China reached $18 billion, which
made a great contribution to the development of China’s economy
and foreign trade. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart positively involves in community
involvement and has totally donated RMB 20 million (including goods
and money) so far.
As the biggest retailer in the world, Wal-Mart has topped the Fortune
Global 500 List for four consecutive years with the sales of $
285,200 million in 2004. Wal-Mart has also been listed into “The
Most Respected Companies” and “The Best Employer to
Work For” in many countries. So far, Wal-Mart successfully
operates 5300 stores in US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, Argentina,
Brazil, China, South Korea, Germany and UK with over 1.6 million
associates. Every week, almost 140 million customers visit Wal-Mart
stores worldwide.
