Wal-Mart & Red Cross started 2005 Care Act
---Wal-Mart Brought New Year Presents to 550 Needy Families

(January 27, 2005. Shenzhen) Today, eleven Wal-Mart stores along with Shenzhen Red Cross Association started 2005 Care Act. Wal-Mart donated RMB110,000 to 550 needy families in Shenzhen, which every needy family received a RMB 200 shopping card. Needy families were pulled from Luohu district, Futian district, Nanshan district, Bao'an district, and Longgang district. The shopping card allowed families to select any merchandise in the store.

On January 10, 2005, the second term of Care Act Committee was formed by Shenzhen government agencies. As a sound corporate citizen, Wal-Mart adheres community services to help local neighborhoods. In September 2002, Wal-Mart started Good Works program to help neighbors and this donation to needy families was an example of Wal-Mart community services.

Eleven stores of Wal-Mart Supercenters, Sam's Club, and Neighborhood Stores participated the Care Act event. Along with the Local Street Committee's assistance, stores confirmed lists of needy families in the neighborhoods. On January 27, 2005, Wal-Mart's donation helped those needy families to a fruity Chinese New Year.

Mr. James Lee, Vice President of Wal-Mart Investment Co. Ltd attended the Care Act Ceremony in Shekou Wal-Mart Supercenter. Mr. Lee expressed helping neighbors was one of Wal-Mart traditions and Wal-Mart would continue focus on social contribution. Wal-Mart would provide customers with quality merchandize at low price with friendly service. Wal-Mart had been sponsoring community service in helping neighbor, supporting education, caring children, protecting environment and disaster relief since Wal-Mart entered China. For example, Wal-Mart donated RMB 660,000 to China Youth Development Foundation to sponsor 1,000 farmer children to continue primary education in July, 2004. Wal-Mart sponsored meal for Shenzhen orphans in Christmas in 5 star-hotel every year. Wal-Mart donated RMB 500,000 to sponsor surgeries for above 200 cataract patients. Ms. Zhao Lizhen, secretary of Shenzhen Red Cross attended the event and highly commended this.

Wal-Mart opened its first store in Shenzhen in 1996. To date, Wal-Mart has operated 43 stores in 20 cities and employed more than 20,000 associates. Wal-Mart had actively participated in local community service and our contribution exceeds RMB19 million to various charity organizations over past eight years since 1996.
