Wal-Mart China Awarded for its Outstanding Social
Welfare Contribution

June 22, 2004 – Wal-Mart China was awarded “Best Community
Service of Guangming Charity Award” by Guangming Daily.
This is the first time for the national media to elect this type
of awards. The award intends to praise multinational corporations
for their outstanding contribution, encourage further participation,
and share their experience to promote Chinese charity programs.
As an outstanding corporate citizen, Wal-Mart has actively committed
to community service since it came to China in 1996. It has donated
RMB 9.6 million to Chinese charity organizations during past eight
years. In 2002, Wal-Mart launched a “Good.Works.” program
throughout the country, which includes helping neighborhood, supporting
education, caring children, protecting environment, and relieving
disaster. The program was highly praised and welcomed by local
communities where Wal-Mart stores operate.
Ms. Sharon Zhang, the Public Relation Director of Wal-Mart China,
attended the award ceremony and press conference that was held
in Beijing. She expresses it is Wal-Mart’s honor to accept
the award of the best community service. The company will continue
their commitments in community.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is the largest retailer in the world. In
2003 Wal-Mart achieved global sales of USD256.3 billion. It has
topped the Fortune Global 500 list for three consecutive years
and “American’s Most Admired Companies” for successive
two years. Currently, Wal-Mart employs more than 1.5 million associates
worldwide and operates over 5,000 stores in the US, Mexico, Puerto
Rico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, China, South Korea, Germany and
the UK. Wal-Mart also owns a 37.8% interest in Seiyu, Ltd. in Japan.
Wal-Mart opened its first Supercenter and SAM’S CLUB in Shenzhen,
China in 1996. Since then, it has opened 39 stores in 19 cities
with over 20,000 associates.
