Wal-Mart Opens its Second Supercenter in Tianjin

Tianjin, April 29th, 2004 – Wal-Mart announces the grand opening of its second Supercenter in Tianjin. Du Caixia, Party Secretary of Hedong District, Chen Yanyun, Director of Hedong District, and Cassian Cheung, President of Wal-Mart China attend the opening ceremony.

Wal-Mart Heping Store, the first Wal-Mart Supercenter in Tianjin, has operated smoothly in the past three months under the great support by customers and government officers at all levels. Wal-Mart Xinkailu Store is the second Wal-Mart Supercenter in Tianjin, which is located on the first to third floors of Jiahua International Commerce Building in North Huachang Street, Hedong District. It has a business area of 12704 square meters and provides over 20,000 kinds of merchandise, including fresh food, frozen food, grocery, household chemicals, cosmetics, household electronic appliances, apparels, bedding, sports products and toys. For the convenience of customers nearby, Wal-Mart specially offers bulk purchase and delivery services and the service hotline is 24332588. Special customer services also include umbrella lending, one-hour free parking, belt hole punching and free altering of pants etc. Wal-Mart Supercenter opens from 7:00 to 21:00.

Having long commitment in Good Works to the community, Wal-Mart donated RMB 100,000 to Tianjin Charity Association for the establishment of an e-teaching room and a recuperation room to the disabled students in Hedong Special School. As an effort, Wal-Mart expects to help more disabled students to get recuperation training and to gain more independent competence in the society. This is the second donation program Wal-Mart carried out since it entered Tianjin. When Wal-Mart Supercenter Heping Store opened in December 2003, the company financed RMB200,000 to 80 cataract sufferers from poor families to get optical recovery surgery. At present, 60 of the cataract sufferers have received surgeries successfully and the last 20 patients are getting physical checkups and will get the recovery surgeries by the end of April 2004. Wal-Mart has been regarding itself as a member of community. More than being a good merchandiser, the company takes active role in community good works and always looks for more opportunities to service the community. Since 1997, Wal-Mart China has donated over RMB9.4 million to social welfare agencies, education endeavor and disaster relief agencies.

Wal-Mart opened its first Supercenter and SAM’S CLUB in Shenzhen in 1996. Since then, it has opened 37 stores in 18 cities, including Shenzhen, Kunming, Fuzhou, Dalian, Xiamen, Shantou, Dongguan, Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Changsha, Beijing, Nanchang, Jinan, Qingdao, Tianjin, Nanjing and Nanning. The second store in Tianjing is its 38th store in China. Now it has 33 Supercenters, 3 SAM’S CLUBS and 2 Neighborhood Markets.
