Wal-Mart Supercenter Premieres
Outside Shenzhen Economic Special Zone

Shenzhen, Feb. 24th, 2004 – Wal-Mart announces the grand
opening of its tenth Supercenter in Shenzhen today. The Wal-Mart
Supercenter Buji Dafen Store is Wal-Mart’s first store outside
Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, seven years after it successfully
opens its first Supercenter and SAM’S CLUB in the city. Joe
Hatfield, CEO & President of Wal-Mart Asia, Cassian Cheung,
President of Wal-Mart China, and government officials from Longgang
District attend the opening ceremony. At the ceremony, Wal-Mart
announces to donate RMB75,000 to Shenzhen Yuanping Special School
for the establishment of an e-reading room to improve the disabled
children’s study capability there.
The Wal-Mart Supercenter Buji Dafen Store is located on the first
to third floors of Longji Building in Dafen Country, Longgang District.
It has a business area of 17,000 square meters with parking lots
for 150 vehicles and provides over 20,000 kinds of merchandise,
including fresh food, frozen food, grocery, housewares, household
chemicals, cosmetics, household electronic appliances, apparels,
bedding and toys. The store models the latest Wal-Mart Supercenter
in the U.S. and has become the flag shop in China. Considering
the strong demand of volume purchase from factories nearby, Wal-Mart
specially offers bulk purchase and delivery services. Free shopping
bus is also another service for customers’ convenience. Wal-Mart
Supercenter opens from 7:00 to 21:00.
Cassian Cheung, President of Wal-Mart China, says at the ceremony
that during the past seven years, Wal-Mart has gained popularity
among Shenzhen citizens with its Every Day Low Price and friendly
customer service, and has promoted the development of Shenzhen’s
commerce and retailing industry. To Shenzhen citizens Wal-Mart
equals low-priced merchandise of high quality and satisfaction
guaranteed services. Wal-Mart Supercenter Dafen Store will continue
its Every Day Low Price operating philosophy and offer customers
outside the Special Zone to enjoy the warm services by Wal-Mart
associates and the fun of shopping at Wal-Mart.
Having long-term commitment of Good Works to the community, Wal-Mart
donates RMB75,000 to Yuanping Special School for the establishment
of an e-reading room, as an effort to propel the cause of special
education in Shenzhen and to ease the reading difficulties for
disabled students there.
Wal-Mart opened its first Supercenter and SAM’S CLUB in
Shenzhen in 1996. Since then, it has opened 34 stores in 17 cities,
including Shenzhen, Kunming, Fuzhou, Dalian, Xiamen, Shantou, Dongguan,
Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Changsha, Beijing, Nanchang, Jinan,
Qingdao, Tianjin and Nanjing. Now it has 29 Supercenters, 3 SAM’S
CLUBS and 2 Neighborhood Markets.

is committed to providing high quality low priced products and
warm and friendly service to customers. Wal-Mart procures over
USD15 billion merchandise from China on direct and indirect basis
in 2003, making positive contributions to China’s economic
and foreign trade development. Wal-Mart also takes an active role
in welfare causes. Since 1997, Wal-Mart China has donated over
RMB9 million to social welfare agencies, Hope Schools and disaster
relief agencies.
