Wal-Mart Opens Its First Supercenter in Nanjing
RMB 200,000 Donated to Nanjing Hope Project

Nanjing, January 1st, 2004 - Today, the New Year's day, Wal-Mart
China Co., Ltd. announces the opening of the Supercenter in Nanjing.
The exciting grand opening brings an even happier New Year to the
Nanjing citizens. The Nanjing Supercenter is Wal-Mart's first Supercenter
in East China and it is the 34th store in China. The Nanjing Wal-Mart
Supercenter is located on the second and third floors of Wanda Shopping
Plaza in Hongwu Road, which is a prosperous commercial area. The
Supercenter has a business area of 18,000 square meters with 200
parking spaces and provides over 20,000 kinds of merchandise, over
95% of which are from local. The second floor is equipped with cash
registers and provides fresh food, while the third floor provides
apparel, electronic appliance and other household products.
Supercenter is Wal-Mart's major business format in China and it
aims to save customer's time and money by offering one-stop shopping
experience. Cassian Cheung, the President of Wal-Mart China, says
the store will be committed to providing Nanjing customers with
advanced retail management and friendly shopping experience based
on the Every Day Low Price operating philosophy. To appreciate the
customers and to celebrate the New Year in Nanjing, Wal-Mart offers
price promotion for a series of products, and various retailtainments
during the grand opening.
As its long commitment of Good Works: Care Children, Support Education
and Help Our Neighbors, Wal-Mart donates RMB 200,000 to Nanjing
Hope Project Office to establish 10 Wal-Mart Hope Library and Computer
Room in the neighborhood for the teenagers in poor family. Dean
Ding Ming from Hope Project Office expressed their appreciation
to Wal-Mart, "This Good Work not only offers education resources
for the poor teenagers in Nanjing, but also the love and care of
Wal-Mart helps to bring a bright future to them."
Wal-Mart opened its first Supercenter and Sam's Club in China in
August 1996. Since then, Wal-Mart has opened 33 stores in 16 cities,
including Shenzhen, Kunming, Fuzhou, Dalian, Xiamen, Shantou, Dongguan,
Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Changsha, Beijing, Nanchang, Jinan
and Qingdao and Tianjin. Now it has 27 Supercenters, 4 Sam's Clubs
and 2 Neighborhood Markets.
Wal-Mart practices its "Every Day Low Price" operating philosophy,
promotes the corporate culture of " Respect for the Individuals,
Services to Our Customers and Strive for Excellence" and is committed
to providing high quality low priced products and warm and friendly
service to customers. Wal-Mart procures over USD 12 billion merchandise
directly and indirectly in China in 2002, making positive contributions
to China's economic and foreign trade development. Wal-Mart also
takes an active role in welfare causes. Since 1997, Wal-Mart China
has donated over RMB 8.9 million to social welfare agencies, education
endeavor including Hope Project, and disaster relief.
Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer; in 2002 Wal-Mart achieved
global sales of USD 244.5 billion and had topped the Fortune Global
500 for consecutive two years. It was also named as one of the "Most
Admired Companies" and the "Best Companies to Work for" in many
countries. At present Wal-Mart has nearly 1.5 million associates
worldwide and operates over 4,800 stores in the United States, Mexico,
Puerto Rico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, China, South Korea, Germany
and UK.
